An official mobile safety application developed in partnership with the Public Security Department of the State of Piauí (SSP-PI), Brazil, to provide immediate assistance to drivers facing dangerous situations.

The problem

Drivers needed a way to ask for help without exposing themselves to additional risk. Traditional emergency channels, such as calling 190, can be too slow or too visible in a dangerous situation. A driver under threat may not be able to speak, explain their location, or safely interact with a complex interface. At the same time, public security teams needed structured and reliable information to understand what was happening, where the driver was, and how to coordinate a response.

How might we help drivers request emergency support quickly and discreetly while giving public security teams enough information to respond effectively?

Our solution

A panic app for drivers in real-life risk situations (robbery, express kidnapping, threats during patrols, pursuit). The user activates a button, and the system begins transmitting continuous location and ambient audio to a call center, which triggers the appropriate protocol (police, emergency contact, incident report).

One button. One cell phone. Someone on the other end seeing where you are and hearing what's happening, in real time, with recordings that become evidence.

To understand the risks faced by app-based drivers, I conducted desk research across public safety reports, government datasets, industry studies, and local SSP-PI data. The research revealed a clear gap: while millions of Brazilians depend on app-based driving as a source of income, drivers remain highly exposed to violence, theft, and emergency situations, often without immediate access to public safety services.

Violence against drivers is frequent and underreported

Studies show that 59.1% of drivers have experienced violence or harassment while working. Many incidents are never officially reported, creating significant blind spots in public safety data.

Response time is critical

Documented cases frequently involved kidnappings, armed robberies, and situations where drivers were unable to call for help. In emergency scenarios, every second matters, making rapid and discreet alert mechanisms essential.

Existing solutions leave important gaps

Platform-native panic buttons typically work only during active rides. Drivers remain vulnerable while waiting for rides, driving between trips, or working across multiple platforms.

Motorista Seguro is more than an emergency button. By connecting drivers directly to public safety operations and generating structured incident data, the solution has the potential to improve both emergency response and long-term public safety policy.

Motorista Seguro serves app-based drivers who depend on the road for their livelihood. Despite differences in age, experience, and working hours, they share a common reality: long shifts, constant exposure to unpredictable situations, and a strong need to feel protected while working. To better understand their motivations, behaviors, and safety concerns, I built four representative personas that capture the primary user groups and their unique challenges.

Carlos has worked as an app-based driver for over six years and depends entirely on driving to support his family. He spends 10–12 hours a day on the road, often accepting rides in unfamiliar neighborhoods to maximize earnings.

Design for the worst moment

Designing for someone with tunnel vision, a trembling hand and no time to think made the whole product simpler — for everyone, in every state.

Constraints come from the field

The risk levels, the copy, the flows only worked because they were shaped with the operators and officers who actually respond to emergencies.

Trust is a feature

In safety, perceived reliability matters as much as function. Calm tone, honest feedback and an official identity were deliberate design decisions.

When in doubt between simpler and more reliable, choose more reliable. Between more beautiful and more obvious in panic, choose more obvious. Between faster to ship and more robust, choose more robust — even with smaller scope.

Launched on June 16, 2026, Motorista Seguro saw rapid adoption among ride-hailing drivers in Piauí. In less than two months, the product recorded:
